Needed a 5/8” carriage bolt (the appropriate length to go through your wood or pipe, so that there are not more than 2 threads showing past the nut) a 5/8” nylock nut and 2 washers. Make sure washers are not smaller in diameter than nut, to prevent entanglement. See Figure A1.15. Make sure wood or pipe is strong enough to support weight of wheel and spinning motion. Drill 5/8” hole through wood or pipe. Place washer next to wood, then place bottom half of steering wheel hub next to washer, then steering wheel, then top half of hub with round hole. Put carriage bolt through top of steering wheel. Place second washer on the backside of the wood then the nylock nut. Tighten nylock nut so that it is secure and not more than two threads are protruding past the nut. Make sure that the steering wheel can spin freely.
Maintenance: At the beginning and end of each play season and once a month during the play season, check that the steering wheel can spin freely. Check for vandalism, sharp edges, rust or splintered wood. Make sure nut is secure. Replace parts as necessary. Maintain detailed inspection and maintenance records for public-use playground equipment.
